Controller syncing problems are one of the most common issues we see with gaming consoles. Sometimes the fix is simple, while other times it points to a hardware fault with the controller, console, or even the USB cable being used.

Xbox controllers and PlayStation controllers handle syncing differently, which is important to understand when troubleshooting.

Xbox Controller Syncing Issues

Xbox controllers are usually very straightforward to sync. Both the console and controller have dedicated sync buttons.

To sync an Xbox controller:

1. Turn on the Xbox console.
2. Turn on the controller.
3. Press the sync button on the console.
4. Press the sync button on the controller.
5. The Xbox logo lights will flash while syncing and then stay solid once connected.

If the controller will not sync, common causes include:

• Faulty sync button on the controller
• Faulty sync button on the console
• Faulty WiFi/Bluetooth module inside the console
• Flat batteries

PS4 and PS5 Controller Syncing Issues

PlayStation controllers work differently from Xbox controllers. PS4 and PS5 consoles do not have dedicated sync buttons.

Instead, the controller must first be paired using a USB data cable.

How to Sync a PS Controller

1. Use the Correct USB Cable

• Plug the controller into the PS4 or PS5 using a USB sync cable.
• Important: Make sure the cable supports data transfer. Some USB cables are charge-only and will not work for syncing.

Press the PS Button

• Press the PS button located between the analog sticks.
• The light bar will begin flashing while the controller attempts to sync.

Wait for the Light to Stop Flashing

• If the controller syncs immediately, you are done.
• If it does not sync straight away, do not keep pressing buttons repeatedly.
• Wait for the flashing light to stop.

Press the PS Button Again

• Once the light stops flashing, press the PS button again.
• The controller should now connect and the light bar will stay solid.

Problem With USB Cables

A huge number of syncing issues are caused by incorrect or damaged USB cables.

Many USB cables sold online are charge-only cables. These cables only contain power wires and completely lack the data wires needed for syncing and communication. This means the controller may charge normally, but the controller will never sync.

Even genuine sync cables can fail over time. If one of the internal data wires becomes damaged, cut, or shorted, the cable may still charge the controller but not work for syncing.

This is why simply seeing the controller charge does not confirm the cable is working properly.

Common hardware faults include:
