Stick Drift Explained: What It Is, What Causes It, and How It’s Properly Repaired
If your controller is moving on its own, your aim is drifting, or your character won’t stay still, you are dealing with what’s commonly known as stick drift. It’s one of the most frustrating issues for gamers, and unfortunately, it’s also one of the most common faults we see.
The good news is that stick drift can be repaired properly, but only if the right method is used.
What Is Stick Drift?
Stick drift happens when your controller registers movement even when you are not touching the analog stick. This can show up as slow movement in one direction, jittering, or inconsistent control.
Inside every controller, the analog sticks rely on small electronic modules. These modules track movement and send signals back to the console. When they start to fail, the signals become inaccurate, which results in drift.
What Causes Stick Drift?
Most standard controller modules use potentiometers. These rely on physical contact inside the module to measure movement. Over time, those internal contacts wear down.
- Normal use over time
- Dust and debris getting inside the controller
- Hair and fibres working their way into the module
- Spills or moisture entering the controller
Once the internal contact surfaces are worn or contaminated, cleaning rarely fixes the issue long-term. It may improve things briefly, but the underlying problem remains.
How Is Stick Drift Properly Repaired?
The only correct way to repair stick drift is to replace the entire analog module. This removes the worn components completely and restores proper function.
At our workshop, we do not attempt temporary fixes like spraying cleaners into the sticks or trying to mask the issue. The faulty module is removed and replaced, followed by full calibration and testing to ensure accurate input.
PlayStation Controllers: Hall Effect and TMR Options
PlayStation controllers can be upgraded during repair. Instead of standard potentiometer modules, we install Hall Effect modules as part of our standard repair process:

Hall Effect modules use magnetic sensors instead of physical contact. Because there is no internal wear surface, they last significantly longer and are far more resistant to drift.
For PS5 controllers, there is also the option to upgrade further to TMR modules:
TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) modules offer even greater accuracy and responsiveness, making them the highest performing option currently available.
Xbox Controllers: Quality Matters
Xbox One and Xbox Series controllers still rely on potentiometer-based modules. Because of this, the quality of the replacement module is critical.
Cheap third-party modules often have limited range of movement or poor accuracy, which can result in ongoing issues even after replacement. We use good quality modules that provide full range of movement and proper response, ensuring the controller performs as it should.
Can Stick Drift Be Prevented?
While wear is inevitable over time, keeping your controller clean can significantly extend its life.
- Keep controllers away from dust and dirt
- Avoid eating or drinking over them
- Store them in a clean, dry environment
- Wipe them down regularly
These simple steps help reduce the amount of debris that can work its way into the modules and accelerate wear.

Stick drift is a hardware issue caused by wear inside the analog module. While temporary fixes are often suggested online, they rarely solve the problem properly.
Replacing the module is the only reliable solution, and upgrading to better technology where possible can significantly improve long-term performance.
